This policy explains how the Synclify project ("Synclify," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use the Synclify extension for Microsoft Edge or another supported browser, visit synclify.party, or contact us. Synclify is an open-source watch-party project. You do not need to create an account to use it.
Information the extension handles
Information stored in your browser
The extension stores information needed to remember your session and preferences, including:
- Your chosen nickname.
- Extension preferences, such as playback, chat, and reaction settings.
- Room and participant identifiers, current room state, and whether a video was found.
- User-interface preferences, such as the chat bubble position.
- A randomly generated identifier used to associate product analytics events.
Most of this information stays in the extension's local browser storage. Settings stored using your browser's sync-storage feature may be processed and synchronized by your browser provider according to its own privacy policy.
Information sent through the Synclify service
When you create or join a watch party, the extension connects to the Synclify server. It sends the information needed to operate the room, which may include:
- The room code, a random participant identifier, your nickname, and participant state.
- Playback events such as play, pause, seek position, volume, and event timing.
- Chat messages and reactions you choose to send.
- Technical connection information, including your IP address and socket identifiers.
Room information and playback events are shared with the other people in your room so that playback stays synchronized. Your nickname, chat messages, and reactions are also shown to those participants. Do not put sensitive personal information in your nickname, chat messages, or reactions.
The Synclify application keeps active room state in server memory, including during a short reconnection window, and removes it after the room becomes empty. Chat messages, reactions, and playback events are relayed to room participants and are not stored in an application database. Infrastructure providers may process limited connection and security logs when operating the service.
Extension analytics and diagnostics
The extension automatically sends product analytics and error diagnostics to PostHog through the Synclify server. This helps us understand whether features work and investigate failures. Depending on the event, this information may include:
- The extension's random analytics identifier.
- Feature-usage events, room identifiers and participant counts, and extension version.
- Browser, device, network, and other technical metadata, including IP address where applicable.
- Error messages and diagnostic context.
- The website host or full page URL when video detection fails.
- When you submit a website report: the reported page URL and title, plus the details you choose to provide.
PostHog processes this information for product analytics and diagnostics. The extension uses PostHog's European ingestion service. You can learn more in the PostHog privacy notice.
There is currently no separate in-extension switch for analytics. Disabling or uninstalling the extension stops future extension telemetry. A website report is only sent when you choose to submit one.
Website analytics and feedback
The Synclify website uses a Synclify-operated instance of Umami to measure visits and understand how the site is used. This may process the page visited, referrer, browser and device information, event time, and technical request information such as an IP address. We use this information in aggregate to maintain and improve the website, not for targeted advertising.
Our feedback and privacy-request form is provided through Google Forms. Google processes the information you choose to submit and related technical data under the Google Privacy Policy.
Why we use this information
We use the information described above to:
- Provide watch rooms, synchronized playback, chat, and reactions.
- Remember your settings and keep the extension working across browser sessions.
- Measure feature usage, diagnose errors, prevent abuse, and secure the service.
- Respond to reports, support requests, and privacy requests.
- Comply with legal obligations and protect the rights and safety of users and the service.
When information is shared
We share information only as needed to operate Synclify:
- With other participants in a watch room, as described above.
- With PostHog for extension analytics and diagnostics.
- With Google-hosted services for website analytics infrastructure and forms.
- With hosting, network, and security providers that run the website and watch-party service.
- When required by law or necessary to protect users, Synclify, or others.
We do not sell personal information, broker user data, or share it for targeted advertising.
Retention
Browser-local information remains until the extension removes it, you clear the extension's data, or you uninstall the extension. Synced settings may remain with your browser provider under that provider's retention practices.
We keep analytics, diagnostic, security, and feedback information only for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described in this policy, including resolving problems, protecting the service, and meeting legal obligations. We delete or aggregate information when it is no longer needed.
Your choices and rights
- You may use the default "Anonymous" nickname instead of providing a name.
- You control whether to send chat messages, reactions, and website reports.
- You can clear locally stored extension data through your browser or by uninstalling Synclify.
- You can disable or uninstall the extension to stop future extension connections and telemetry.
- You may ask us to access, correct, or delete information associated with you, or object to or restrict its processing, where applicable.
Because Synclify does not require accounts and much of its information is pseudonymous or temporary, we may be unable to connect stored information to you. We may ask for details needed to locate a record while avoiding the collection of unnecessary identifying information. You may also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
Security and international processing
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections where supported. No internet service can guarantee absolute security. Synclify and its service providers may process information outside your country. Where required, those providers are responsible for using appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
Children
Synclify is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through Synclify, please contact us so we can review and delete it where appropriate.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when Synclify's features or data practices change. We will publish the updated version here and revise the effective date. We may also provide additional notice when a change materially affects how we handle information.
